Phonics

An eight year old boy, called William, is the reason the Guinea Pig reading scheme exists. He was a very reluctant reader, who had barely made a start in acquiring literacy, but with our scheme, he had fluency in nine months.

Why labour teaching your child to read?

Our reading scheme is a fast, fun way to teach a child to read, in only 8 books. Follow the humorous adventures of Sam and his friends, as you build up a series of phonic sounds. Your child will be on the road to fluency in as little as 6 months.

An Intensive Course of Systematic Phonics

Introduce sounds a few at a time and build up words. Sounds are taught in this order: c a t o d g f x v n p w e r m u h b s l k j y z qu l. To make this fun, play bingo, snakes and ladders, and matching pairs to reinforce the words.
Learn to blend initial sounds together, like spot the dog and doll in a pram. Then, learn final consonant endings, such as soft cat rests. Syllable words (like lemon, seven, kitten) are also taught at this stage.
Start introducing vowel digraphs, like ee, oo, ar, or, ur, ir, oa, ai, ay, oi. Plus, consonant digraphs, like ch, sh, th, wh, ph. For each of these sounds we provide word and sentence matching activities.
Once the first sounds have been introduced, it’s time to start reading simple stories, which introduce more complicated sounds. The stories are simple ones, which children can identify with.
