Phonics | oa sound | Reading Practice Pack
This pack introduces children to words containing oa such as soak and foam. When learning to read, children need to recognise this letter pattern and learn that oa usually makes the long o sound in words. The saying “when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking” can help children remember this pattern.
Children will read the short story about Sam’s week. It includes lots of oa words, giving children plenty of opportunity to practise reading these words in context. Read the story several times to help your child become familiar with these words and how they are said. Afterwards, children will make a list of all the oa words used in the story. There is also a cut-out activity where children match individual words and phrases containing oa words to the pictures.
This pack is useful for children who are learning to read words with this sound, as well as children who need extra practice. Repeated reading will help children become more confident at recognising this letter pattern, choosing the correct sound and reading the words more easily and fluently.
The story is taken from the fifth book in our Learn To Read With Phonics reading scheme. We have split the book into separate resources for those looking for extra help in a particular area. To purchase the complete book, click here.
