Children will start by reading sentences showing how adding a suffix or prefix changes a word, such as
“Sam is sitting in his garden, but the gardener comes to cut the grass and he has to go in.”
They will go through each sentence and find the words containing prefixes and suffixes. After that, they read the short story Naughty Nigel, about Sam’s disruptive school mate Nigel. It includes lots of words containing prefixes and suffixes, giving children plenty of opportunity to practise reading these words in context. Read the story several times to help your child become familiar with these words and how they are pronounced.
