This pack introduces children to words containing the sound ou, as in south, cloud and ground. It also introduces the two sounds ow can make, as in how, towel and flower, and snow, glow and grow. Children need to become familiar with these common letter patterns because ou and ow can make the same sound, while ow can also have a different sound. Learning to recognise ou and ow will help children read these words more fluently and become more confident when they meet unfamiliar words.
Children will read the short story The Holiday, about Sam and Kim's family caravan holiday. It includes lots of words containing ou and ow, giving children plenty of opportunity to practise reading these words in context. Read the story several times to help your child become familiar with these words and how they are pronounced. Afterwards, children are asked to make a list of all the words containing ou and ow in the story.
